Betsy DeVos: Leader Of The Changing Face Of U.S. Education

Nov 13, 2017 |

Born in Holland, Michigan, Betsy DeVos was a part of the wealthy Prince industrialist family when I first became aware of her and the impressive work she was doing in the education reform movement and in other areas of interest. I was unaware of the work Betsy did prior to joining the education reform movement as a volunteer advocate for ‘at-risk’ students in the Michigan public school system; it was during her time as an advocate I believe Betsy DeVos began to develop the knowledge of the issues facing the families of the state through her personal history of understanding the work of her public school teacher mother. Betsy DeVos has impressed me over the years for the dedication she has shown to provide an efficient and successful education system for the children and families of Michigan.

After news broke of the appointment of Mrs. DeVos to the position of Secretary of Education in the U.S. within the Administration of President Donald J. Trump. Despite the fact Betsy DeVos has never served in a position of power in the education department of a federal or state organization, I believe her decades spent campaigning for more parent and guardian choice in education across the U.S. serves her well in bringing fresh ideas and a new approach to the people of the U.S. political appointments have been plentiful and forthcoming for Betsy DeVos as she has become a major part of the rise of many Republican politicians in power in the 21st-century. President George W. Bush obviously agreed with me in thinking Betsy DeVos could provide a fresh outlook for an organization in need of a new direction when she joined the board of the Kennedy Center for the Arts. Betsy DeVos and husband Dick have been a powerful force for the development of arts management programs through her funding for the DeVos Institute for Arts Management.

Twice named as Chair of the Michigan Republican Party, Betsy DeVos has always maintained a political outlook I believe was developed during her time studying at Calvin College where she was a force for good in many political and community programs. The dedication to community Betsy DeVos has shown throughout her life continued through to her appointment as the Secretary of Education; in the past few decades, Betsy and Dick DeVos have impressed me with the high level of their philanthropic giving through their own foundation reflecting their own political and personal ideals. I believe the work of Betsy DeVos as an education reformer is just one aspect of her work which will continue to impress people like myself for many years to come as she seeks to give the children of the nation the best possible start in life.
